Increased attention to health disparities by HHS is well timed considering that ½ of the uninsured come from the minority population of the and will soon be entering the insured population with health reform. As the new people enter the system the business of providing care will become dramatically different if steps aren’t taken to prepare the system and to improve the wellness of the underserved population.
The fact that the efforts began prior to Obama being elected and therefore prior to health reform shows us that the desire to improve health outcomes for minority populations was not merely an outgrowth of health reform. The urgency of the action plan has been substantially increased as the health care system has the potential to change in a way that makes health disparities and the experiences of the underserved more of a burden on the health care system.
Providing care to the masses of newly insured people will be stressful and overwhelming if the reform takes shape in the way it is planned to, adding access for people who are unfamiliar with how it works, have more health problems and less trust of the system will only make the process more stressful. It is good to see that the effort to reduce health disparities is being made but, I am not sure how much progress will be made between now and when the uninsured gain access.
